College Access Now
Introducing CAN at Garfield
Good Morning Garfield Staff!
I am the Program Supervisor for College Access Now here at Garfield. I wanted to take a minute of your time to introduce the members of the Garfield CAN team and to explain our program for new staff. See our organizational CAN website for more info also.
Stephanie Mathew (firstname.lastname@example.org) is the 12th Grade College Coach here at Garfield. This is her second year with the program – she is sticking with her class of 2015 cohort as they get ready for college. She is in the building Monday-Thursday, 9 – 5.
Chloe Hunt (email@example.com) is the 11th Grade College Coach here at Garfield. She is new to Garfield, and she will be working with the class of 2016. Chloe is also be in the building Monday-Thursday 9 – 5.
My name is Emily McCaffrey, and I am in the building on Tuesdays and Thursdays to support our amazing College Coaches, as well as support all the work of the College Network at Garfield. I am looking forward to meeting you all!
The mission of College Access Now is to empower students from low-income families to access, enroll, and graduate from college at rates equal to their more advantaged peers.
CAN’s College Coaches help students break down the college process into manageable steps, while offering practical and emotional support as they navigate applications, financial aid, and family obligations. Getting into college is just the first step – CAN is an eight year program, supporting students as they transition into college and all the way through graduation.
To apply to College Access Now, a student need only submit an application, which they can pick up from outside the CAN office in Room 319. Students who qualify for CAN are juniors or seniors, are typically on free or reduced lunch or enrolled in the College Bound program, and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA. While we primarily support students from low-income families, we are happy to help any student through the college application process. We are currently recruiting 11th graders to join our program, and welcome referrals from faculty and staff.
Please know that we are a resource to any student looking for help through the college application process. We work closely with the College Network (the other College Access Providers, the College and Career Center, and the Counseling Office) to serve all Garfield students.
Please reach out with any questions! We look forward to working with you this year!
