College Access Now (CAN)

CAN at Garfield

The mission of College Access Now (CAN) is to empower students from low-income families to access, enroll, and graduate from college at rates equal to their more advantaged peers.

CAN’s College Coaches help students break down the college process into manageable steps, while offering practical and emotional support as they navigate applications, financial aid, and family obligations. Getting into college is just the first step – CAN is an eight year program, supporting students as they transition into college and all the way through graduation.

To apply to College Access Now, a student need only submit an application, which they can pick up from outside the CAN office in Room 319. Students who qualify for CAN are juniors or seniors, are typically on free or reduced lunch or enrolled in the College Bound program, and maintain at least a 2.0 GPA. While we primarily support students from low-income families, we are happy to help any student through the college application process. We are currently recruiting 11th graders to join our program, and welcome referrals from faculty and staff.

Please know that we are a resource to any student looking for help through the college application process. We work closely with the College Network (the other College Access Providers, the College and Career Center, and the Counseling Office) to serve all Garfield students.

Please reach out with any questions! We look forward to working with you this year!
