Advisory at Garfield This Year

Advisory gives students dedicated time during the school week to monitor academic progress, get help when needed, complete planning activities, and connect with the Garfield community.

The purpose is to help students become more aware of their academic needs and progress while also creating time for clubs, community building, and other opportunities to stay connected to school.

Every student has a regular Advisory teacher/Home Room. On non-travel days, students remain in Home Room. That time may be used for studying, completing work, schoolwide announcements, assemblies, safety information, Grade Checks, and required School Links activities.

Beginning in October, students will also have opportunities to travel during Advisory.

Tuesdays will primarily focus on academic support. Students may travel to another teacher for extra help, test retakes, or other academic needs. Thursdays will primarily focus on clubs and student involvement. Students who do not travel will remain in Home Room and may use the time as a study hall.

Students who travel must register for their destination in advance using the digital pass system that will be introduced in October. When Advisory begins, students report directly to the room they selected and remain there for the period.

Advisory is a credit-bearing class. Students receive a Pass or Fail grade and can earn .25 credit each semester. To pass, students must have no more than five unexcused absences during the semester, complete two Grade Checks, and complete all required School Links assignments.

Attendance and school expectations apply during Advisory just as they do in other classes. Hall pass expectations remain in place, and the district cell phone policy applies during both Home Room and travel.

Advisory gives students dedicated time during the school week to get academic support and to be active members of the Garfield community. Students can use the time to get help from teachers, complete retakes, check their academic progress, participate in clubs, and connect with opportunities across the school. The goal is to make sure students have both the time and access they need to be successful academically and engaged in the life of Garfield.
