Updated Advisory Schedule January 29
As we begin the second semester on Wednesday, January 29, we want to provide an update on the revised Advisory schedule. These changes clarify the purpose of each Advisory period and ensure that students have structured time for community building, extracurricular engagement, and academic support.
A key change is that Advisory is now scheduled after 6th period. This adjustment provides greater flexibility, allowing club meetings and academic support to extend into after-school hours when needed. In addition, there is no Advisory on Fridays. Attendance in Advisory remains mandatory, as it is a credit-bearing course, just like all other classes.
Thursday Advisory: This advisory is focused on academic support and intervention. Students will have the flexibility to travel and meet with teachers or access needed resources.
Monday Advisory: This advisory is dedicated to community building within Advisory classes. It will also serve as a forum for gathering student feedback on schoolwide concerns and a platform for the Student Senate to share updates and key topics. No travel will occur during this Advisory.
Tuesday Advisory: This time is reserved for club and student organization meetings, which gives students the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities and collaborate with their peers.
Jan. 2025: New Vestibule Under Construction to Improve Security
A new secure vestibule is currently under construction at Garfield High School to improve building security. This addition will ensure that all visitors are routed through the front office for check-in before being granted access to the main building.
The vestibule will create a controlled entry point between the front doors and the rest of the school. It includes a glass wall and secure doors that will separate the foyer from the rest of the building. Once completed, the entry process during school hours will be as follows:
- Visitors will be buzzed in through the exterior doors.
- They will enter the secure vestibule and proceed to the front office for check-in.
- Access to the main building will only be granted after completing the check-in process.
This system is designed to strengthen school security by requiring all visitors to check in before entering the building. The locked vestibule doors will prevent unauthorized access while maintaining a clear and efficient check-in process.
In addition to the vestibule, requests have been made to improve camera surveillance and limit access to side doors to enhance security further. Construction of the vestibule is expected to be completed in early February.
Garfield HS Building Access Procedures
Students should not open any door to allow any person into the building, regardless of if they are a student or staff member. Failure to comply with this rule will result in a school-based response/consequence. Students and staff will enter and exit the main building at the main entrance.
The entrance is set on a timer system that unlocks the door at 7:15 a.m. until the start of 1st period. The timer system will unlock and relock the door at the beginning an end of each passing period and during lunch.
Students attempting to entire the building outside of passing periods are required to use the call box to request entry into the main building. Students are expected to provide their full names and grade levels to enter the building outside of passing periods.
All side doors will be limited to Emergency Exiting only and should not be used to enter and exit the building.

GHS Inclement Weather Plan
When potential inclement weather conditions occur, families need to be aware of how this may impact the school schedule. The district will communicate promptly regarding any changes, which could include a two-hour delay or a switch to remote learning.
Key Points to Note
- Two-Hour Late Start with In-Person Learning: If we have a two-hour delay but still hold in-person classes, please be informed that buses will run on snow routes.
- This adjustment will result in changes to our regular school schedule.
- School Buildings Closed with Remote Learning: In cases where school buildings are closed, students will shift to remote learning from home.
- On the first day of such a transition, we will start with a two-hour delay to ensure that everyone is adequately prepared.
- If remote learning continues on subsequent days, students will follow their regular school schedule. For remote learning instructions and links, students should access Schoology.
Please stay tuned for updates from the district regarding weather-related schedule changes. Safety is our top priority, and we are committed to ensuring that all students continue their learning without interruption.
