SEATTLE — Garfield High School, founded in 1920, is a historic and diverse public school in Seattle that has long been a cornerstone of its community. The Garfield band program carries a rich legacy in the Central District. “I love it, couldn’t imagine my life in high school without being in music,” said one student. “It’s one of the most fun things that I do; it’s really rewarding,” another student added.
Their music programs have taught thousands of students the art and have won them numerous awards. Several notable musicians attended the school including Jimi Hendrix, Lil Tracy, Quincy Jones, Macklemore and Ernestine Anderson. The school has an orchestra program that includes a symphony orchestra, a concert orchestra and a chamber music program.
The jazz program stands as a powerhouse, collecting state, national and international awards in big band, combo and solo performances. Its sustained excellence in national competitions has established Garfield as home to one of America’s premier high school jazz programs.
“This program has a long history, used to be directed by the legendary Clarence Acox,” said Garfield High School Director of Bands and Jazz Jared Sessink. “Without him, we would not have what we have right now.” The marching band performs at an elite level, distinguished across the Northwest and nationally for both its musical artistry and marching precision.
“This is one of the loudest bands in the city. This group shows up and is loud,” said Garfield High School Director of Choirs, Percussion Blake Saunders, “My students work really hard.”
That hard work is why the Garfield High School band won Best High School Band in 2025’s Best of Western Washington viewers poll. ~ KING 5’s Evening celebrates the Northwest.
