Hello Everyone! My name is Simone Parker and I will be the new Instructional assistant (IA) for the Special Education department here at Meany Middle School.
I am originally from Seattle and have grown up in and around the area my whole life. I attended the bush school as well as Montlake elementary. For middle and high I attended Nelson MS and Lindbergh HS both in the Renton school district. After high school I spent my summers working for the Lakeside (schools) Educational Enrichment Program (LEEP) while attending Washington State University (go Cougs!) to pursue my bachelors in Psychology.
While at WSU I was a part of the Lightweight Women's Rowing team for all four years where we competed at a national level. I also served as my teams commodore my junior year of college. I finished off my degree by completing a 400+ hour internship with Ryther (a community mental health agency) in their sub acute residential treatment program. After my internship I remained at Ryther until June of ’18 when I moved to on-call. This past summer I worked at Aki Kurose Middle School in the summer school program. I look forward to beginning my professional journey with Seattle Public Schools and am proud to now call myself a Meany Mountain Lion.
I've been teaching science at Garfield since 2011. I love the 'Aha' moment that I have with my students when they have been working on a complex problem and they finally get it and are able to explain how the world works.
Despite the gloom and doom scenarios around climate change and the environment that are young people are inheriting, I believe passionately that we can change that outcome and create a better future. I teach compassion, creativity, and that everyone has something powerful to contribute.
Video Production Teacher.
Teaching at Garfield is the culmination of a life's journey that included service in the Army, as well as the Navy early on. I am an Iraq War veteran, and I also worked in television news as an Anchor/Reporter for stations in top 10 Markets. I have a BFA in Digital Filmmaking and Video Production.
This is my 13th year at Garfield, and my 21st year teaching. I teach Precalculus, AP Statistics, and AP Calculus AB. Outside of school, I ride my bike a lot, create art, travel, pet my cat, and cook.
If you need to get in contact, email is preferred. Thanks.
