WELCOME TO GARFIELD HIGH SCHOOL, HOME OF THE BULLDOGS!

Dear Garfield Families and Students,

Garfield is the flagship school of Seattle Public Schools and opened its doors in 1920. Academic excellence is the framework of our foundation. As a Bulldog, you are a member of a community that strives to maintain the highest levels of academic excellence. The faculty is committed to providing high quality instruction to every student at Garfield. Our mission statement says that “we are committed to growing diverse leaders who understand how to work together to create positive change in our school and in our communities”. To perfect and continue to bring our mission into fruition, we will engage the entire community to create a clear and actionable plan to build on Garfield’s success. It is my expectation that every student at Garfield receives high quality, evidence-based instruction and the supports necessary for success.

As we enter the 2021-2022 school year still in the throes of the pandemic, we recognize that we are in unprecedented times rife with uncertainty. Rest assured that our primary focus is to ensure that all students and staff return to in-person learning in a safe, welcoming, and supportive learning environment. In addition, our administrative team has identified initial priorities to engage, listen, and learn from the Garfield community.

Create a Student Advisory Council, representative of the Garfield community, to gather unfiltered student input

Host ongoing listening sessions to engage the entire Garfield community and capture honest insight and experiences

Prioritize time spent visiting classrooms

Begin a comprehensive and granular review of school-wide and subgroup academic achievement and discipline data

Begin a review of school level policies, procedures, practices, and systems

Conduct ongoing equity walks with administrative team members, students, and teachers to accurately assess the state of equitable educational practices in all classrooms in Garfield.

These priorities will help us to learn all we can this school year so that we can create a clear, well informed path forward to implement and sustain equitable practices at Garfield.

I am excited to be a part of the Garfield community and, I look forward to a safe and successful school year.

Sincerely,

Tarance Hart, Ph.D. Principal
