Current Volunteer Opportunities

There are many ways to volunteer with Garfield, either through the PTSA or within the school.  PTSA requests tend to be one-time, event related commitments.  The opportunities within the school are typically more long-term, once/week opportunities, but occasionally a staff member will have a short term, project-related request.  Please see below for current opportunities.

 School Based Opportunities

If you can help with any of the following requests, please contact Martha Layzer at mmlayzer@seattleschools.org for more information.  Also, if you would like to volunteer, but don't see something here that works for you, please contact me and I will contact the teachers.  Thank you!   (as of 3/27/17)

Spanish Class Volunteers:

Gretchen Sloan would like classroom assistance in her Spanish 1 classes - 2nd, 3rd, 5th or 6th period.  Any day or period is helpful!

Geometry Class Volunteers:

Ms. Dilorio would like assistance in her 4th period Geometry class.  Block day, Thursday, is preferred but any day is  helpful!

Journalism Class:

Corey Martin is looking for "experts" in the field of Journalism.  Anyone with experience in the field(s) of design, publishing, advertising or journalism in general.  he would love to have either guest speakers or people ready to lend an expert touch to the class.  Journalism meets 4th period.

Chemistry Class - Administrative support:

Ms. Jones is looking for help cleaning lab equipment or organizing paperwork. Times and days are flexible.

Science Classroom Volunteers:

Volunteers needed in science classes (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) on Wednesday and Thursdays to assist with labs.  Teachers need assistance getting the students started and answering questions during the lab.

Physical Science Class Volunteers:

Volunteers needed to assist in Physical Science classes.  Willingness to work one-on-one or in small groups with a diverse group of students. A strong science background is not required, just the desire and commitment to help students in need.  Physical Science classes meet every day periods 1-5, but you only need to commit to 1 or 2 classes once/week.  All that is asked is that you be consistent.  

Language Arts Classroom Volunteers:

Ms. Taylor would like assistance reading practice AP Essays.  Training will be provided and it can be done on your own time.

Environment Science and Horticulture Classes:

Rachel Finley is looking for volunteers to assist with the following:

*  Assistance with big organization projects and helping keep the room running well.  Can be a semi- reoccurring job done during 6th period or after school.
*  Help with garden tasks!  This can be done during 5th period Horticulture or 6th period.

Personal Fitness Class Volunteer(s):

Jessie Purcell would love a volunteer for her 3rd period Personal Fitness class.   It is a large class with students in need of extra attention.  3rd period meets 10:50 - 11:45 M,T and F, and 10:50 - 12:45 on Wednesday.  Help any of the days would be appreciated!  The only skill required is a love for exercise as it is a movement-based volunteer position! 

Ceramics Class Support:

Anita West is looking for help with her Ceramics class(es).  Her classes meet 1st - 3rd period and assistance would be appreciated any day.  A background in art is helpful, but not necessary.  Help is needed with cleaning, organizing, inventory, and assisting students with their ideas.
